History of the house:
The four-story apartment building at 13-15 Hajós Street was built in 1898 according to the plans of József Jahn. In the 1860s, a one-story building stood on the site, then called Hermina Square, then, according to the surviving plans, it was extended, and in 1870, when there was no Opera House next door, an Orpheum or singing hall was built there.
József Jahn designed a series of similar huge apartment buildings around the turn of the century.
In the first half of the twentieth century, the house changed hands relatively often, in 1903 it was already owned by Count Aurél Dessewffy, the last judge of the country, followed by Dr József Weisz in 1916 and in 1928 it was in the name of Richárd Krasznai. The National Institute of Guardianship and Pensions was restructured in 1934, but it survived the war without a hit. Inside, in the entrance hall, the restored Lotz frescoes are eye-catching. Entering the courtyard is dazzling, partly because of the size of the building and partly because of the lodge-like corridor Jahn favoured in all his tenement houses, here (also) richly decorated with columns and a stone balustrade, approached by a suspended corridor on the left. In addition to the main staircase, there are two others. Every detail of the house is beautifully crafted and it is a special treat to see it renovated.
